Billing - WIP Report

The Static WIP (Work-in-Progress) Report provides a comprehensive snapshot of all unbilled hours up to a specified period-ending date, allowing firms to track and manage WIP effectively for billing and resource planning.

Key Features:

  • Customizable Date Range – View WIP data for any specific timeframe to analyze unbilled work at a given moment.

  • Detailed Filtering Options – Use billable types, partner in charge, and other criteria to refine report insights.

  • Flexible Grouping & Search – Leverage the Group By and Advanced Criteria functions for customized reporting.

  • Accurate Billing Management – Ensure that all unbilled hours are accounted for and properly invoiced.
  • Group by Billing Parent Toggle – Allows you to view WIP grouped under the Billing Parent Client (if applicable). (Note: When this option is enabled you will see the child clients listed under the parent name for transparency. You cannot drill-down by child client. If desired re-run the report without group by billing parent to see child specific WIP. Client based filters / groupings - including Advanced Criteria, Client Custom Fields, and client based preset Group By options are not available in this view)

Example Scenario:

  • June 1st – You have 200 unbilled hours (WIP).
  • June 2nd – You invoice 50 hours from that total.
  • June 3rd Report:
    • If you set the period ending date to June 3rd, the report will display 150 unbilled hours.
    • If you set the date back to June 1st, the report will still reflect the original 200 unbilled hours.

This ensures that WIP data remains accurate and unchanged, reflecting the actual status at the selected date, making it an essential tool for tracking unbilled time and managing firm revenue.

How to Access the Report:

  1. Navigate to View Reports on the black ribbon on the left.
  2. Under the Billing section, select WIP ReportView.

By leveraging the Static WIP Report, firms can improve cash flow management, resource allocation, and billing efficiency while maintaining a clear view of work-in-progress activity.

Running the WIP Report:

  • Select a period ending date
  • Search for a client in the Search text box by typing in the client name
  • Group by Billing Parent Toggle – Allows you to view WIP consolidated under the Billing Parent. (Note: When this option is enabled, Advanced Criteria, Client Custom Fields, and some preset Group By options will not be available.) View more info on Group by Billing Parent in the WIP Report
  • Add Group By Options (Up to 3 Group by Options can be selected)
  • Advanced Criteria - You can filter by Client Tags and select Client Custom Fields

  1. Hours:
Represents the total number of unbilled (not yet invoiced) hours (WIP) through the selected period ending date.
  2. Subtotal:
Represents the total unbilled hours multiplied by the applicable billing rate. This subtotal matches the subtotal displayed on the Billing Dashboard when the same period ending date is selected.
  3. To Invoice:
Represents the remaining dollar amount of WIP yet to be invoiced. This amount aligns with the "Invoice" total displayed on the Billing Dashboard when the same period ending date is selected.
  4. Cost: If the Setting for Tracking Costs for Realization for User and Expenses is Enabled you will see a Staff Cost Calculation

In the above example, the subtotal for Client #1006 Crisp & Co. is Hours: 9.27 and Total: $1,072.24, the same is reflected on the WIP report.

Important Note: the To Invoice amount can differ if the item amounts have been manually adjusted.
